History

For over  1500 years Antrim has been a settlement on the shores of Lough Neagh and The same Lough is known to be the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles.

The  town of Antrim is steeped in history, ranging from a Round Tower to the ruins of Antrim Castle. The Round Tower was constructed by monks as part of their settlement during 10th century. A local legend tells a tale of a witch jumping from the top of the tower in anger at it being built and landed on a large boulder below, leaving an impression of her knee and elbow in it. This very stone is still there next to the tower. This stone has been found to be over 1500 years old and is also believed to have been the food preparation table for the monks.  Walking tours are available for the town of Antrim which will show you everything of historical interest, and these tours can be booked through Antrim Town Tourist Information office on the High Street.
